What is Green Tea Extract?

Green tea extract is a concentrated preparation from the leaves of Camellia sinensis. The SodaSlim panel prints unusually complete standardization: 98% polyphenols, 75% catechins, 45% EGCG and under 3% caffeine. Applying those percentages to 130 mg gives roughly 127 mg of polyphenols, about 98 mg of catechins and about 58 mg of EGCG per capsule, plus under 4 mg of caffeine.

EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) is the catechin most often studied for antioxidant and metabolic effects. For scale, a cup of green tea very roughly provides a similar order of EGCG, though amounts vary widely.

What the research shows

Evidence for green tea extract and body weight is modest. Most analyses find little to no meaningful effect on its own, and small differences, where seen, tend to be clinically minor. Pairing it with caffeine is common in the category because the combination has been studied for energy use, but results remain small.

As with the other botanicals, it is best thought of as a supporting ingredient.

Safety and who should be careful

Most of the safety concern about green tea extract involves high daily EGCG intakes. A European safety review concluded that doses of 800 mg or more of EGCG a day from supplements were associated with raised liver enzymes in some people. One SodaSlim capsule provides about 58 mg, far below that, but do not stack it with other green tea extract products. Rare liver injury reports exist, so people with liver disease should ask a clinician first. Green tea may interact with some medicines, so ask a pharmacist if you take any. NIH NCCIH summarizes the safety picture.

Safety note: SodaSlim contains 138 mg of caffeine plus botanical extracts. It is not for anyone under 18, or for pregnant or nursing mothers, and you should consult a physician before use if you take medication or have a medical condition. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA.

How it fits in the formula
